THE LYMAN ALLYN ART MUSEUM CONTINUES ART HISTORY FOR ALL COURSES
New London – The Lyman Allyn Art Museum is proud to announce the continuation of its lifelong learning program, Art History For All… This Winter/Spring course, beginning February 4th, is entitled, “The Advent of Modernism in Connecticut.”
Barbara Zabel, professor emeritus of Art History at Connecticut College and curatorial consultant at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum, will lead this 10-week class at the Lyman Allyn. “The Advent of Modernism in Connecticut” will offer a stimulating perspective on European modernism from Fauvism through Surrealism (approx.1905 to 1940). Professor Zabel will focus on artists based in Europe, including Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Kurt Schwitters, Ernst Barlach, and Salvador Dali, as well as artists like Marcel Duchamp, who came to America to “sound out the future,” and others, such as André Masson, who fled Fascism and World War II.
Central to the course will be an exploration of how European modernists stimulated modern art in the USA through their very presence, and through the corollary collecting interests of museum directors and collectors here in Connecticut. These include A. Everett ‘Chick’ Austin, director at the Wadsworth Athenaeum, Katherine Dreier of the Société Anonyme (whose collection is now at Yale), and Winslow Ames, the first director of the Lyman Allyn Art Museum. The course will include a field trip to the extraordinary collection of modern art at the Wadsworth Athenaeum Museum of Art in Hartford.
Weekly classes will be held in the auditorium of the Lyman Allyn Art Museum. Advanced reservations are required. Please contact the Education Department at 860.443.2545 x110 or email [email protected].
