Materials
This project is perfect for those just learning about primary and secondary colors and want a fun way to practice at home. It can be done with color swatches or color names if your child is reading or learning sight words. Two books you can pair with this project are Green Is a Chile Pepper: A Book of Colors by Roseanne Thong and Mouse Shapes by Ellen Walsh.
- White paper
- Markers, colored pencils, or crayons in the following colors: red, yellow blue, orange, purple, green, white and pink
- Pen or pencil
- Scissors
Instructions
- Cut your paper into even squares, you will need at least eight for the colors, plus an additional two squares for the plus (+) and equal (=) signs.
- Use your coloring tool to fill in a square or create a color swatch so each color has their own square.
- If your child is practicing reading, use your pen or pencil to write the name of each color on each square instead.
- Use your pen or pencil to write a plus (+) and equal (=) sign on the two remaining squares.
- Set up these signs as you would for an addition problem and let your child fill in the blanks using the color swatches and words.
- Use only the colors or words for practice or mix them together to add an additional challenge.
- When not in use store in a plastic bag or paperclip together to help prevent losing the separate pieces.
