LYMAN ALLYN ART MUSEUM SHOWCASES SCULPTURES AND PAINTINGS BY ANA FLORES
NEW LONDON – Looking for a cool place to spend a hot summer afternoon? Consider visiting the Lyman Allyn Art Museum to view its newest exhibition, Forest Dreaming: Sculptures and Paintings by Ana Flores. The show opens on Saturday, June 12 and runs through Oct. 24.
Flores is an award-winning sculptor, ecologist, writer and curator based in Rhode Island and Nova Scotia. She is interested in how place and geography inform who we are. Her sculptures, park designs and environmental designs begin with long walks and explorations into each unique landscape.
Among other works inside the gallery and outside on the grounds, the show will include the artist’s outdoor sculptures, “Forest Dialogue.” These bronze chairs, which appear to be turning back into trees, invite visitors to sit and meditate on their connections to the natural world. The Museum is scheduling a series of outdoor events, including a poetry reading, as an invitation to consider the connection between art and the environment in the coming months. Visit the Museum’s events calendar on www.lymanallyn.org for more details.
“My intellectual and aesthetic bedrock, which was once narrowly focused on art history, has shifted and earth stories have become the compelling force for my creative work,” Flores explains. The exhibition includes a selection from works that inspired this shift of consciousness and made Flores an ecological artist. During her career, along with gallery and museum exhibitions, she has worked with environmental groups all over the country and designed parks.
The virtual opening reception will be Friday, June 11 from 6 – 7 pm. Please visit the calendar of events tab on www.lymanallyn.org for event registration information.
